James Abbott McNeill Whistler (American, 1834-1903) Ponte del Piovan, 1879-80, fifth state of seven (Glasgow, 220; Kennedy, 209). Signed with butterfly monogram in pencil l.c. and within the plate c.r. Etching printed in brown/black on paper, plate/sheet size 8 3/4 x 5 3/4 in. (22.0 x 14.5 cm), framed. Condition: Trimmed to or just within the plate mark with a tab for the pencil monogram, even toning, floated within the mat, not examined out of frame. N.B. Whistler went to Venice in September of 1879 and sojourned there for over a year, returning to London in November of 1880. Estimate $2,000-3,000 The sheet is a laid paper. It is toned and slightly brittle. there is a soft horizontal crease to the signature tab. There are pencil annotations to the verso and old hinges to the left edge (verso). N.B. The monogram in the plate appears on the side of the bridge, and blends in with the shadows on the brickwork there. The seventh state is the cancelation of the plate.
