Celebrated French Post-Impressionist artist Henri Rousseau is widely recognized for his naive or primitive style of painting with works often featuring detailed, exotic-looking compositions with dreamlike sensibilities. After a stint in the French army, Rousseau worked as a toll collector and customs official in Paris (from which his nickname Le Douanier (customs officer) is derived). In 1885 started to paint during his free time, eventually becoming a regular exhibitor at the Salon des IndEpendants and in 1893 was able to devote himself full-time to his art. Rousseaus works are included in museums around the world, including the Tate, Guggenheim Museum, National Gallery of Art, The Art Institute of Chicago, Moderna Museet, Musee de lOrangerie, and Metropolitan Museum of Art.
